Originally from Manila, Philippines and Los Angeles, California, Janella Lacson is a Filipina screenwriter, director and producer. She is a graduate from the prestigious Tisch School of the Arts at New York University, concentrating in film directing and producing. During her time at NYU, Janella produced over 10 short films that have screened at film festivals around the globe.
In early 2012, Janella participated in Outfest Los Angeles’ inaugural film-mentoring fellowship, Outset. She was one of 15 fellows selected for the program and was given the opportunity to write and direct her first short film, an LGBT comedy, The First Date. Following its world premiere in July 2012, The First Date, has screened at over 35 film festivals worldwide and has won numerous awards including the Audience Award for Outstanding Dramatic Short Film at Outfest and Best Lesbian Short at Hamburg International Queer Film Festival. Later that year, Janella was one of 30 filmmakers selected to compete for the largest and most coveted LGBT short film prize in the world, the Iris Prize.
Her second film, Moonlight, will premiere at Cannes Film Festival in May 2015.
Janella is currently in post-production of her next film, Nocturnal.
