Escorts, Vagina Suits, French Movies, Oh My, 2013 in Lesbian Cinema

2013 was an incredibly volatile year for lesbian cinema. I have incredibly bi-polar feelings from one to the next so I’ll start with the most controversial of the bunch.

1-BLUE IS THE WARMEST COLOR (2013) DIR ABDELLATIF KECHICHE STARRING LEA SEYDOUX, ADELE EXARCHOPOULOS

This film….thiiss filmm…

Okay, I know I’ll get some backlash about this but I loathed this film. I went into it incredibly excited. I’d heard so many rave reviews about the film, so much controversy surrounding the filming and I had high high hopes. Maybe that was my problem, my expectations were too high.

I really felt that without the gratuitous sex scene this film was a shaky story about a boring relationship. And now that I’ve said that I will add that I didn’t find the sex scene to be incredibly interesting either. To me this film felt like an excuse for the director to get porn into artsy festivals.

But what do I know about this one? It has won a ton of awards….still hated it.

Blue Is The Warmest Color can be seen on Netflix

Now that I’ve ripped one into this film I’ll add a short which was in festival run this past year. A spoof short called

2-VAGINA IS THE WARMEST COLOR DIR. ANNA MARGARITA STARRING ANNA MARGARITA

This short was a hit at the festival circuit and I think it is a massive improvement on the film itself.

It is the story of Blue Is The Warmest Color in about 10 minutes starring….a vagina.

The short isn’t yet available in its entirety but here is the trailer.

3-CONCUSSION DIR. STACIE PASSON STARRING ROBIN WEIGERT, JULIE FANN LAWRENCE

This one is okay. Not incredibly uplifting. It’s about a relationship worthy of the 50s, you know minus that lesbian thing. Two women are married with children, one has totally exited herself from the relationship for her job and the other…well the other decides to become a prostitute.

It’s actually quite interesting and another testament to not falling for a straight woman, especially when you are both married.

I think the moral of the story was: if you are married with children, make it work no matter what and a true test of what people may do when they love their spouse but just aren’t…gettin any; homegirl really doesn’t want to sleep with her escort wife…come on guys, she needed to be needed.

I saw this one in the theater with my girlfriend at the time and we were both independently looking at one of the characters and totally in love with her. Neither of us could figure out why we liked her so much, she played the straight neighbor who hires the main character, they kind of have a fling..my girlfriend at the time thought she knew the actress personally, I kept churning over where I’d seen her before and just as we both sat in the car BAM it was Rachel Menken from Mad Men.

It’s worth a watch. Kind of depressing but worth the watch.
